CHILDREN FEEDING MINISTRY

Indonesia is considered to be one of the poorest countries in the world. Joyce Meyer Ministries World Mission through Hand of Hope – Indonesia (registered locally as Yayasan Tangan Pengharapan), now has the opportunity to reach the neediest children of Indonesia through the feeding projects by providing free nutritious meals for those children who need it the most.

Hand of Hope – Indonesia is working hand in hand with different local churches / organizations to do the feeding projects in each area. There are 14 feeding centers in different islands in Indonesia, providing FREE nutritious meals for over 610 children, for once a day, 5 days a week. There are 6 centers in North Halmahera, serve 285 children; 1 center in Jakarta, serves 72 children; 1 center in Pepe Village – Central Java, serves 68 children; 3 centers in Nusa Tenggara Timur and Rote – Flores Island, serve 120 children and 3 centers in Mentawai Islands, serve 65 children.

(West Timor)
Hand of Hope – Indonesia serves 120 children, 5 days a week for the children in East Timor. The details are as followed:
- 60 children in Oenif Village, Kupang
- 30 children in Telukh Village, Oe’ekam
- 30 children in Netenaen Village, Rote Island

General Information about NTT (West Timor); The most reasons for their poverty

People of NTT is one of poorest people in Indonesia. There is not much development in their areas and the living standard is very low. Some people work as fishermen, but mostly work as seasonal farmers. They could only plant during rainy seasons.

The land in NTT is very dry. There is no water in the river under the bridge. The long dry seasons could reach to 8 months in a year. The short rainy seasons makes the people could only plant their fields once a year. The land condition is most suitable for corn field. They could not sell the harvest; it is only enough for daily living.

Mostly the children would eat corn and beans as their main food. The children grow lacked of nutrition. It affected their growth and mentality. They are not confident and tend to be passived. Their height is not compatible to their age. They are a lot smaller than they should be.

The price for rice is very high. They could not produce much because of the short rain fall. The Government usually would subsidies the rice to the village; by selling cheap rice to the people once every six months.

The long dry seasons make it hard to find clean and fresh water. The people have to collect the rain water, for their daily needs. Some people, who work as cattle’s keeper, would work hard to look for water and green grass for the cattle. Their children have to help them to walk miles crossing the hilly roads to look for water and green grass to feed the cattle for extra incomes.

The traditional house of the people in NTT is called LOPO. It is made of Lontar tree (sort of Palm tree). The people would do all daily home activities inside LOPO; such as cooking, storing food, sleeping and fire the wood to keep them warm at night. They are used to breathe in the smoke from the fire since they were very small. It causes them to suffer bronchitis and tuberculosis. They get headache and diarrhea very often. Some people would have a separate “proper home” for living, and use the LOPO for their food storage and kitchen.

The people in the villages are low educated. There is only one elementary school that was built by the government in each village. The children have to walk about half to one km to go to the elementary school. The parents have to send their children to the central district if they want to continue to junior and senior high school. Instead of walking so far to school and with their financial problems, the children would leave school and choose to work to help their parents to survive for living. As time goes by, they continually live in the same situation.

There are no qualified teachers in the schools. There are not many teachers who want to dedicate their lives for the children in the small villages. Most of the teachers would only junior high school graduated.
There is no health clinic or hospital in the villages. They have to go miles to the nearest town for medication / health care. They hardly go to hospital because of the distance and difficult finances. They would use natural medicines from plants to cure themselves and their children. Many have died without knowledge.
Hand of Hope – Indonesia through the networking with Yayasan Pintu Gerbang Ministry has chosen to help the children in Telukh Village in Oe’ekam, Oenif Village in Oekona and Netenaen Village in Rote Island.
